How to Join a Band in London as a Saxophonist

4 min read

Saxophonist playing with a live band in a London rehearsal studio

Sax is not always the first instrument a band thinks of. Guitar, bass, drums and vocals form the default line-up, and saxophone often gets added as an afterthought, if it gets added at all.

That leaves saxophonists with a smaller pool of bands willing to build a sound around them properly.

The real issue

It is not a shortage of sax players wanting to play. It is a shortage of bands with a genre and arrangement that actually suits the instrument, plus a director who knows how to give it a real role instead of a token solo.

What changes that

A band matched around your style from the start, whether that is soul-leaning pop, blues or classic rock horns. A director who arranges songs to give saxophone genuine space. And a rehearsal studio and schedule that hold together for the whole term.

How BetheBand works for saxophonists

You start with a Meet & Greet, a relaxed one-to-one with a professional band director covering your level, your influences and the kind of band you are after. From there you are matched into a full band of 4 or 5.

You bring your own saxophone. Rehearsals run weekly for 12 sessions at a professional rehearsal studio in Central London, with a dedicated band director for the whole term who gives you a proper part in the arrangement rather than squeezing you in. Every session is recorded so you can keep working on your parts at home. Read more about how a BetheBand term works.

You also help pick the material. Every member suggests songs, and the band aims to include at least one pick per person, so there is room for the tracks that actually suit sax.

Where it leads

A full live show at an iconic London venue, with saxophone as a real part of the sound, not an add-on.
